Deadlines

POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES state, national, and international prizes in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. We list only prizes of $ 1,000 or more, prizes of $,500 or more that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first visit the sponsoring organioation’s website for complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). Academy of American Poets

LENORE MARSHALL POETRY PRIZE

A prize of $25,000 is given annually for a poetry collection by a living poet published in the United States during the previous year. The winner also receives a 10-day residency at the Glen Hollow cottage in Naples, New York. Copies of the winning book are distributed to approximately 200 members of the Academy of American Poets. Self published books are not eligible. Using only the online submission system, U.S. publishers may submit a PDF of a book of at least 48 pages published in 2023 with a $75 entry fee by May 15. JAMES LAUGHLIN AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a second book of poetry by a living poet to be published in the next calendar year. The winner also receives an allexpenses-paid weeklong residency at the Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Copies of the winning book are distributed to approximately 1,000 members of the Academy of American Poets. Using only the online submission system, U.S. publishers may submit a PDF of a manuscript of 48 to 100 pages that has come under contract for publication in 2025 by May 15. There is no entry fee. American Literary Translators Association

LUCIEN STRYK ASIAN TRANSLATION PRIZE

A prize of $6,000 is given annually for a book of poetry or a text from Zen Buddhism translated from an Asian language into English and published in the previous year. Publishers or translators may submit a book translated from Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Sanskrit, Tamil, Thai, or Vietnamese into English and published in 2023 by March 18. ITALIAN PROSE IN TRANSLATION AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a book of fiction or nonfiction translated from Italian into English and published in the previous year. SPAIN-USA FOUNDATION TRANSLATION AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a book of fiction or nonfiction written by an author of Spanish nationality and published in the previous year. Publishers or translators may submit a book translated from Basque, Catalan, Galician, or Spanish into English and published in the United States in 2023 by March 18. There is no entry fee. NATIONAL TRANSLATION AWARDS

Two prizes of $4,000 each are given annually for a book of poetry and a book of prose translated from any language into English and published in the previous year. For the poetry prize, poetry collections in translation are accepted; for the prose prize, short story collections, essay collections, novels, memoirs, and hybrid prose works in translation are accepted. Publishers may submit a book published in 2023 by March 18. The entry fee is $50 for presses that publish more than 10 titles each year and $30 for presses that publish 10 or fewer titles each year.
