That no one had yet explored to this scale the impact of geological factors on both combat and combat preparation is surprising. As Scott makes clear in his interview with us, the significance should not be downplayed. Prime examples occurred in the devastation of Federal armies at both Fredericksburg, Va., on December 13, 1862, and Fort Wagner, S.C., on July 18, 1863.
