RIDDLE OF THE RECORDS

The date of 449 CE for the original Saxon invasion is as troublesome as the date of 410Northumbrian monk and historian, and in the from the ninth century. The Battle of Mount Badon is traditionally dated to 493 CE (hence 449 CE) but there are alternatives – a date of 500 CE and even 516 CE. What is more, the invasion of Hengist and Horsa is mentioned in some other sources as occurring earlier – perhaps 418 CE or the 420s CE. All of this causes headaches for working out exactly what happened when and why – and even by whom).
