A red wine headache is recognised by the International Headache Association as being distinct from a normal hangover, and now scientists at the University of California in San Francisco think they know why some of us suffer from it. The culprit, they believe, is quercetin – which, confusingly, is actually good for you. It’s a flavonoid with antioxidant properties found in many fruits and vegetables, which is a positive thing. The bad news is, the combination of quercetin and alcohol stops your body from effectively metabolising the alcohol in your system: instant headache!
