o much of what keeps us warm, shields us from weather, and carries our belongings in the modern world is made of synthetic materials. In antiquity, people often used leather. In January, at the 2024variety of small objects, reveals the ubiquity of ancient leather. The research team analyzed proteins in the leather to determine the animal species used to make different items. Preliminary results challenge the common belief that Roman tents were made of goatskin and instead show that the Romans relied on sheep and cows for hides and leather products in this region of northwest Europe.
