TRUE-LIFE
Sitting in the hospital waiting room, next to my partner Alekos, then 28, I already knew life was about to change forever.
It was New Year's Eve 2019, and docs had called me in to discuss the results of a biopsy.
I'd found a lump in my right breast a few weeks earlier, you see.
‘Sophie McGarry,’ a voice called.
I walked on shaky legs and sat in an office in front of a consultant.
His face said it all.
‘It's cancer,’ he said.
His words knocked the wind out of me.
I was only 22, and though he explained they'd caught it early, my tears poured.
