INTERNATIONAL (Peru - Chile)

For two short periods in 2023, two daily pairs of trains were run on the Tacna-Arica line, firstly in late August to celebrate the city of Tacna's birthday, and again in late September in connection with a gastronomic event “Peru con mucho gusto”; there had been criticism of the complete lack of trains during Holy Week in April, when complaints had been raised as to the negative effect on tourism on both sides of the border.

ARGENTINA

Following his election as president of Argentina on November 19 2023, Javier Milei has begun to implement his plans for transport provision in the country, and it is possible that that the negative effect on rail transport will be even worse than happened in the 1990s under former president Carlos Menem.

The Ministry of Transport has been merged into a new Ministry of Infrastructure, with only one secretary responsible for transport, and amongst other state owned companies the railways are once again to be privatised.

Despite the fact that billions of dollars have been invested in the railway in recent years, incurring debts that have still to be repaid, the railways are to be handed over to private companies, and it may well be that the operation of all long distance trains will be suspended in March this year, and as all subsidies are to be withdrawn
