Not that most owners these days would realise it, but an MG Midget is a surprisingly capable little car in snow — so Dennis Cestra tells me over coffee at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On an appropriate set of tyres, this black 1964 Mk2 Midget would often easily outperform larger, beefier cars even on the snowbound roads near the ski resort, not far from Pittsburgh, where Dennis used to work.
Back in 1969, although he had been on the hunt for a car that was sporty, cheap and stylish, he didn’t have a Midget in mind. “I wanted a sports car and I had my eye on this Bugeye Sprite and he sold it out from under me,” recalls Dennis.
Though annoyed at the time, it wasn’t long before he heard tell of one of his college fraternity brothers selling a certain black Midget for $650. “I figured ‘why not?’ so I did it. It changed my life actually.”
