Sunak’s Rwanda bill savaged by Tory peers with warning it's like the acts of 'despots and autocracies'

Rishi Sunak’s flagship Rwanda bill was savaged by Tory peers with a warning its measures were similar to those associated with “despots and autocracies”.

The onslaught came as the House of Lords started its line-by-line scrutiny of the Government’s Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill.

The legislation was expected to be widely criticised by Labour, Liberal Democrat and Crossbench peers.

But Tories also tore into it.

The controversial draft legislation and a treaty to the stalled deportation scheme after the Supreme Court ruled the plan was unlawful.
