AUCTION RESULTS

ABNORMAL ISSUE

On 16 January, Stanley Gibbons auctioned part two of the Phillips Collection of Great Britain. One of the highlights of the sale was an 1862 1s deep green from Plate 3, with hair lines across each of the squares containing the check letters (lot 184). This rare stamp was a top-marginal example of this abnormal issue, so called because it originates from the five sheets printed after the initial imprimatur sheet was produced. Lettered AD, this very fine stamp, with original gum, surpassed its £8,000–£10,000 estimate to reach a hammer price of £25,000.
