As TOH magazine marks its 29th year of publication, we look back at how we’ve captured the talented team who launched television’s home-improvement genre and continues to set the standard, on some of their—and our—favorite covers. Each one jogs a memory or captures a moment in time, starting with the very first issue: TOH master carpenter Norm Abram, pictured with then-host Steve Thomas, recalls the photo shoot as a quick break in filming at the Napa, CA, project house. As you can see, plaid shirts and tool belts have been cover staples ever since.
“We weren’t surprised to hear there would be a magazine—we knew the work we were doing on the show was top quality. From Day 1, our mission was to have people with top skills showing how to do things right, and we were proud of what we were doing.”
