When I walked up to the counter of the Burke & Wills Roadhouse and asked to speak to the owner, the pretty young blonde behind the counter smiled and said in her thick accent: “They're away, but you should talk to Kay”.
Kay Remfrey, Cook and Manager of the Burke & Wills Roadhouse, would have to be one of the most generous and hard-working women I met on my two-month tour around outback Queensland. She was way out of her comfort zoneheard of the Burke & Wills Roadhouse. I hadn't either, until I was driving from Mount Isa to Cloncurry, and then up to Karumba, and it was midway on my journey.
