WHERE TO START
Do your research. Ask neighbours who’ve done work to their property about their experience and whether they faced any restrictions. Consult a planning expert, architect or builder and research what’s allowed in your area via if you live in England or Wales, or in Scotland. Find out whether your property is located in a conservation area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, national park or if it is listed, as these factors can all influence what’s allowed. If your property is listed, you’ll need to apply for listed building consent.
