It’s winter and a bit damp. I’m watching Editor Lee Sibley negotiate the turning area with a slight grimace on his face, rightfully fearful of the RS’s nose as he negotiates lunar-sized craters that look like they could swallow the entire car. There are bits of gravel collected in the various intakes, vents and fins of the track refugee. These have been thrown up by its massive tyres, which aren’t exactly suited to the conditions today, either. Really, I can’t help but think the RS looks a bit silly. Absurd, actually.

Now, I’ll admit, I’ve been lucky enough to drive the RS in its natural habitat on track at Silverstone, and its ability to repeatedly bang out deeply impressive lap times is testament to the incredible dedication of Andreas Preuninger and his team at the GT department. But here on the public road, where any 911 should feel at home, no matter how extreme? I’ll have the Dakar.

Actually, I’d have the Dakar regardless of where and when. Dare I say it, but the RS is now just a bit too RennSport for me these days. Yes, that sounds daft, but this RS has taken an evolutionary leap from something akin to a running shoe to running spikes, upping the ante to the point
