IT’S 1973 and a black British band have just gone to the States where, with little promotional budget, they score a Top 50 single and a hit album. They play arenas and stadiums while supporting the likes of Al Green, Mandrill and Ramsey Lewis; they also became the first UK outfit to appear on and headline the Harlem Apollo. You’d expect them to come home to a hero’s welcome – the all-conquering black Beatles,says the band’s drummer, Sam Kelly.
