‘The Color Purple’ hits the sweet spot, blending tragedy with show tunes

Based on the 2005 stage musical inspired by Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel, film musical The Color Purple requires a delicate balancing act: How else to tell a personal tale of rape and racism with show tunes?

If anyone could pull it off, it’s Ghanaian-born director Blitz Bazawule, whose work has included the Afrofuturist The Burial of Kojo and Beyoncé’s visual album Black Is King.
