The wilder shore

TRAVEL JOURNAL

We used a succession of different taxis to get from the Malawi-Tanzania border at Songwe to Nkhata Bay on the shore of Lake Malawi. This 315 km leg of our journey took 12 hours. Our drivers regularly got pulled over at police roadblocks and told to pay some sort of fine, apparently because of the five zungus in the car… Each delay cost us about 20 minutes and R20 before we could continue our journey.

The next day we were on the hop again. Our plan was to sail from Nkhata Bay to Likoma Island. From there, we’d go ashore on the Mozambican side of the lake at the town of Cobue. We’d mapped out a wilderness hike with a local guide south of Cobue.

There were two ways of getting to Likoma Island: express boat, which would cost US$450 for the five of us; or the much
