Pulmonary fibrosis can be caused by different conditions that scar the lungs and stiffen them. Some types have identifiable causes, but often a definite cause can’t be found and it’s called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It’s not cancer or cystic fibrosis, and isn’t contagious.
