FIRE ENGINES aren’t always massive bright red monsters. Many large factories used to employ smaller, but still red, appliances to tackle fires, or at least keep them under control until the local brigade could arrive with serious equipment. Not just factories either; Hellingly Hospital, a large, remote site, was just one that maintained a local service, like many others, made up of employees with extra training.
Several manufacturers offered modest appliances to special order. Land Rover was probably the most popular in the UK, but Volkswagen also entered the market, contracting out the actual conversions to the British firm Branbridge.
Prototypes like this make for interesting and unusual models. Even if you aren’t modelling a large site, a single example is certainly eye-catching as part of a display, or you could load one on the back of a Lowmac to transport
