‘You couldn't buy a cow at that price’

IT'S not every horse (or trainer) that celebrates a win with a Guinness in the local pub, but then, there's nothing everyday about last month's King George winner Hewick (or his trainer Shark Hanlon). The pair arrived at The Pint Depot in Co Carlow, one Monday night in October, on the back of a spectacular win in the American Grand National, which scooped them a very specific £111,111.11 in prize money.

Shark says: “Hewick had his first pint and he loved it.”

The scale of that triumph is all the more impressive because Shark (actually John, but given the nickname by his hurling coach when he was a teen), had bought the horse as a two-year-old for just €850 (less than £800).
