Iron-deficiency and vitamin-deficiency anaemia - two of the most common kinds of anaemia - can be caused by pregnancy. Anaemia occurs when there’s a shortage of red blood cells (or haemoglobin) in the body and can be caused by a very large number of underlying conditions. Your body needs iron to make haemoglobin, and irondeficiency anaemia is caused by a lack of sufficient iron.
