THE OBSOLETE Graham Farish Pooledesigned Class 158 model with its flat clear sided bodyshells has finally been retired in favour of a new contemporary design with solid bodyshells, separately applied glazing and more advanced technical features. It has been some time in development, so has it been worth the wait?

Bachmann kindly supplied Central Trains No. 158856 for review, dressed in the company’s attractive green, yellow and blue livery which sat well with modellers and enthusiasts at the time.

The model is not fitted with the gangway door covers which were usually painted yellow, dating it to the earlier years of the Central Trains franchise which commenced in March 1997. A little time would have passed before the first units were outshopped in the new livery which first had the Central Trains’
