Creating character

Using photographs as information and to inspire ideas can provide a great starting point when thinking about designing paintings. The study and analysis involved in investigating different ideas using the same reference comes in very useful when painting outdoors and selecting compositions from life in the landscape. Identifying several compositions within the same image slows down the process of painting using photographic reference and enables you to consider the possibilities beyond the image. Using ideas you have gathered in your everyday practice builds a link between many different aspects of painting and drawing and giving yourselfthrough these ideas can help you develop your practice further. Changes don't have to be dramatic but taking time to consider the options can be valuable.
