A NEW DAWN FOR CONCACAF CLUBS

CONCACAF’s premier international club competition has a new name for 2024 along with an extra round of games to accommodate more teams. The tournament is returning to its original Champions Cup moniker, which it had until 2008 before being renamed the CONCACAF Champions League.

The expansion makes for an even more diverse tournament. There are representatives from all corners of the region, which in this confederation, and in this particular competition, spans all the way from Vancouver on the west coast of Canada to the Surinamese capital Paramaribo on the northeast coast of South America.

UNITED STATES

Though it is generally more diverse, there is also an overload of teams from the United States in the 2024 tournament. This is partly down to the creation of the Leagues Cup competition, played in 2023 for the first time exclusively between teams from MLS and Liga MX. It offered three Champions Cup qualification spots and, as it turned out, American MLS clubs claimed all three.
