I had always been somewhat of a car enthusiast, following in the footsteps of my eldest brother who, after dabbling sometimes disastrously with Norton motorbikes, had sensibly purchased a 1929 Lea-Francis drophead. I avidly read his copies of Autosport and Motorsport, and when Mercedes-Benz returned to Grand Prix racing, I wrote aged 11 to their factory requesting photos of all their racing cars. They very kindly sent me some beautiful pictures of their pre- and post-war racing cars, signed photographs of drivers Herman Lang (no relation) and Rudolf Caracciola and their famous manager Alfred Neubauer, together with a poster for the 1954 French GP and an invitation to visit the factory!
