Man choked to death on drugs in police custody after officer 'failed to adequately search' him - watchdog

The police watchdog has found a Met officer "failed to adequately search or monitor" a man who choked to death on a package of drugs in police custody.

An inquest, which concluded on Thursday, determined Andrzej Kusper, 38, died as a result of foreign body airway obstruction.

Mr Kusper became unresponsive and died around 8pm on September 4, 2021, at Leyton Custody Centre in east London where he was being held following his arrest.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began investigating Mr Kusper's death after the watchdog was notified by the (MPS) that same evening.
