What is measles? London remains second major national hotspot as outbreak spreads

England is facing a measles emergency, with 86 cases confirmed in the past week and two-thirds of those affected aged 10 or under. 

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said that it brings the total cases for 2024 up to almost 900 – a big spike from the total 2023 figure of 368.

It has said the outbreak has now spread to every region in the country, having originated in the West Midlands, and the rate is at its highest since the 1990s. 

Londoners have already been, with the Government set to contact people in areas where uptake of the MMR
