The Roaring Twenties

This decade saw dresses with drop waists and this fashion seeped into the knitwear of the day with long line cardigans and sweaters that were often belted at the waist, whilst necklines were round, square or v-neck. Sleeves were usually simple in shape and drop shouldered or of the set-in design. Colours were pale and muted.

Men’s knitwear during this period was mainly Fair Isle with Edward, Prince of Wales setting the trend in sleeveless pullovers.

Home knitting during this time was a major hobby, which had grown from the needs of WWI due to the conditions in the trenches, where there was a shortage of socks! After the war companies expanded to meet the needs of home knitters and a plethora of patterns, yarn and tools
