Ah, the joys of youth. The feeling of invincibility and the care free excitemen of living in the moment, unencumbered by the trappings of more adult life.

As with many of us reading this, back then a Beetle was my sole transport and, although I had no real idea what was lurking under my car, I didn’t give it a second thought before heading off to Newquay, or Shakespeare County Raceway for a weekend.

Now, every time I start my Beetle I listen out for unfamiliar noises and worry about the safety of fuel line connections and brake components I’ve fitted and checked countless times. Hmmm, I think I preferred things the way they were before.

I still look back on those years with fondness, though appreciate that reaching a certain age (hopefully) brings with it a level of financial stability that allows you to re-live those golden years of air-cooled motoring, but in the car you really would have
