Some 50 years ago, a gorgeous young actress landed a starring role in what was a bold and brazen new soap opera. Blonde, beautiful and with a singular moniker, she quickly became Australian TV’s first pin-up.
Her name was Abigail and she played the virginal Bev Houghton on the saucy sexand-sin drama Number 96.
Even today, half a century later, Abigail remains one of television’s enduring icons, remembered for her place in 1970s Australia when the daring series took on the taboos of the times and smashed them.
Turning 78 this July, Abigail isfor which she’s still best remembered. TV aficionado Andrew Mercado believes the reason Abigail’s legacy continues to loom so large is because there has never been anyone like her in terms of impact.
