YOUR HORSE IS on the yard and ready for the farrier. He is tied up outside his stable and you have just popped around the corner when you hear a commotion. You hurry back, but where is your horse? He’s no longer tied up, and is making his way back towards his field.

Being tied up is part and parcel of many horses’ daily routines. They are tied up while their owner mucks out, grooms, tacks up, or while the horse is seen by the farrier or physio. However, what should be done if he breaks free? Registered Equine Psychology Specialist Sharon Smith shares her insights…

“My first piece of advice when it comes to any unwanted or unusual behaviour is to stop. In this case, you should stop tying up the‘what’s wrong with him’? but a better line of thought is ‘what’s happening to him to cause him to behave in this way’?
