Wang Tuo

THE SECOND INTERROGATION

Blindspot

MAR 21

MAY 6

Conceptual artist Wang Tuo’s short film (2022) is a timely investigation into the pernicious realities of censorship in China and a deconstruction of art as a vehicle for collective and personal expression. The two-channel video considers notions of authorship from the polarized perspectives of an artist and a government censor who attempt to understand each other’s contrasting viewpoints. Referencing a series of historical performances known as the “Seven Sins” at the “China/Avant-Garde” exhibition in Beijing in 1989, Wang’s film is a metanarrative that adroitly argues whether or not art can serve as an agent of change and find its place within a socialist framework. Wang also exhibited paintings of his counterculture friends in China, highlighting his preoccupation with forms of creative expression still flourishing in underground scenes.
