Ask JOHN NEGUS

When do I prune my fuchsias?

Q Should I prune and feed my hardy fuchsias now or in spring? Some are in the ground and some are in pots.

A Let’s start with those which are growing in your garden. Hopefully, you’ve retained all last year’s shoots to help protect roots from hard frost. Indeed, top growth should remain until temperatures rise in spring and frosts disappear, which usually coincides with a burgeoning of new shoots from the base.

When these are visible, cut back the previous year’s growth to within 2in/5cm of the ground. Follow by sprinkling a balanced granular fertiliser over the root area and watering it in. Repeat
