It’s hard enough to stay cool in the heat when you’re a human, but unfortunately, many pet owners don’t realise how easily their four-legged buddies can get heatstroke, a dangerous condition that can cause organ damage and, sadly, death.
Vet Dr Ashleigh Long, co-owner of Thornbury Veterinary Hospital and The Happy Dog Hub, explains that dogs mostly lose heat by panting and sweating through the pads on their paws – they can’t sweat through their skin like we can.
Because heatstroke can cause irreversible damage, prevention is critical.
