12 500 babies born to schoolgirls

shocking teen pregnancy statistics for eastern cape

The Eastern Cape has once again seen an increase in the number of pupils falling pregnant, with a recent report showing more than 12 500 schoolgirls fell pregnant and gave birth in the province this past year.

Speaking to eNCA, DA MPL Jane Cowley said more than 500 of these pupils were 14 years old, though the provincial department of health had reported only 60 cases of statutory rape.
