MODIFYING GUIDE SAPPHIRE COSWORTH 4×4

Arguably the most sensible of the YB-powered Cosworths, the Sapphire 4×4 now represents the most affordable route into Cossie ownership. That accolade used to belong to its 2WD predecessor, but with most rotting away or being chopped up to have their floor pans welded into Fiestas and Focuses during the 2000s, early rear-wheeldrive Saphs are thin on the ground these days. That makes the 4×4 Sapphire the ideal Cosworth to modify if you’re the kind of owner who gets your kicks from driving your car over telling everyone how much it’s worth.

And it’s a great base, crying out for some well-placed enhancements. The fabled YB engine needs no introduction, and the stronger bottom end in the 4×4 means 400bhp is within easy reach; over 500bhp isn’t far away, and we’ve seen 4×4 Saphs putting down over 800bhp if you really want to push things. And all of that is backed up by the safety net of the four-wheel-drive system.
