S urrey Stitch is perfect for creating fringes, tassels, and tuft-like texture, and can be easily worked on even-weave fabrics. The history of the stitch is rooted in Berlin Wool Work: an embroidery style using wool on canvas that gained popularity in the 1800s. The wool was dyed brilliant colours, reflecting the style of the era. Over time, the Wool Work patterns evolved to embrace a more lifelike, three-dimensional effect thanks to the use of Surrey Stitch. It gained popularity throughout England and America, and could be found in almost all homes during the Victorian period.
