MEETING MY HEROES

They say never meet your heroes, which is convenient, because it’s not something that usually happens. Writing for Retro Gamer since it began in 2004 has given me the opportunity to meet, thank profusely and occasionally get drunk with many of my gaming heroes and for that I am eternally grateful to editors Martyn Carroll and Darran Jones. And now I even get the chance to name-drop shamelessly.

Being a Commodore kid, supping Guinness with Jeff Minter at the RetroVision show back in 2007 and talking about how he coded my favourite, felt a bit magical. I’ve since visited him at his Welsh farmhouse and have been butted in the rear by several of his flock. Knocking a few back with Tony Crowther, the man responsible for so many great C64 titles, was similarly special, and getting to shake hands with creators David Braben and Ian Bell was a real honour. They didn’t shake each other’s hands, mind.
