Q&A

1978 HONDA CB550

Q:I have purchased a ‘plug-and-play’ rectifier from 4into1. It’s supposed to be straightforward but there are some wiring colour differences. I don’t have the old regulator anymore as somebody removed it. The new rectifier has three yellow, green and a red at the connector and left are another green, a black and a white. The factory plug on the Honda has three yellow, one green and one white. My assumption is the extra green is ground/earth? The white is positive battery and the black goes to the coil, I guess the negative side? I wondered if you know anything about this 4into1 rectifier issue.

Let us look firstly at the standard arrangement forchanged the AC into a DC supply for the battery; and a voltage regulator which checked the battery voltage and adjusted the alternator field coil current to alter the alternator’s output level accordingly.
