China earthquake: At least 126 people dead as 6.2-magnitude quake hits Gansu and Qinghai provinces

An earthquake has killed at least 126 people in a cold and mountainous region in northwestern China, the country’s state media reported on Tuesday.

It is feared fatalities may rise further with over 700 reported injured in icy conditions.

Search and rescue operations were under way in Gansu and neighbouring Qinghai provinces.

The earthquake left hundreds injured, severely damaged houses and roads, and knocked out power and communication lines, according to media
