LOTTE KOPECKY GRABS THE CROWN

A monarch’s reign can end in two ways: death or abdication. In the latter, a king or queen renounces their status, and passes on the crown to their heir, typically in an elaborate ceremony.

The last British monarch to abdicate was Edward VIII in 1936. However, in the Netherlands, it has become a de facto tradition, dating back two centuries. In fact, only two Dutch kings have ever died on the throne.
