The sweet scents of winter

Writing off winter as a time when the garden is put to bed ready to re-emerge in spring means missing out on some of the plant world’s most intoxicating fragrances and eye-pleasing flowers. Many seasonal bloomers are accompanied by a delicious perfume that’s especially apparent on those glorious days when the distant sun emerges from the clouds. And it’s often the case that humans aren’t the only beings drawn outside to bask in the warming rays, with beneficial insects grateful to forage these flowers when little else is available.

There’s no escaping the fact that winter is more often than not a mushy and messy time of the year, which is why many gardeners plant their fragrant shrubs and bulbs close to pathways, doors and windows so that they can easily catch their scent and keep their feet dry too.
