OUR MISSION:
In the court of public opinion, this is not an optimal moment for movie studios. At time of writing, we're deep in a period of caustic industrial action which has no end in sight. There are image problems, to put it mildly. However, we want to take this occasion to celebrate what we see as radical corporate art. With his new film, Poor Things, filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has managed to create an eccentric, envelope-pushing feature whose style and tone sit firmly outside the remit of the slick, safe, conventional standard of the archetypal studio offering. Delving back into the history of American studio filmmaking, this is not the first time that something so artful and challenging has managed to slip through the net. Sometimes, quality wins out and success is rewarded with a certain amount of freedom. Red Light / Green Light is a new film festival whose remit is to explore and celebrate the occasions studios have signed off on something that deviates from the norm and doesn’t offer a clear rationale for what is a predominantly machine to make money.
A STATEMENT FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR: JACQUES
GITES
It’s my great honour to present to you this city-wide programme of film screenings and events celebrating radicalism from the most unlikely of sources: the looming, dead-eyed edifices of capitalist endeavour. I bequeath to you a modest selection of titles that I and my trusty programmers found to be worthy of further discussion, with some singular masterworks which left their indelible imprint on the culture at the time, and misunderstood follies whose radical nature only became understood from a safe distance. Please accept this humble offering of accidentally radical cinema.
