Savings here, expenses there

Having just returned from a 1,900-mile trip, I thought I would give you an update on how my TDI engine tuning unit that I fitted has performed. First and foremost, the engine has become much smoother and is now a relaxing drive. The power has shown a great improvement and overtaking lorries uphill has become so much easier and safer. The trip was very similar to the one I took last year where I returned just over 25mpg, this was with my Rapido 886F A-class motorhome loaded to almost its limit of 3,700kg.

This year, I returned 29.9mpg, a saving on fuel of approximately £85. This means that I will have paid for the cost of the unit in a very short time.

On another subject, I had read several letters in MMM about the high cost of caravan and motorhome campsites but really not taken too much notice. However, on this trip, staying at four different campsites, I was amazed at the cost. One campsite charged €22 per night, one €17, one €18 and, finally, one charged €21.

All were for a motorhome plus electric and for two people per night. Each campsite had exceptionally clean toilet blocks, and at least a bar and snack bar and all had swimming pools except one.

On my return to England, I stayed at a Caravan and Motorhome Club site and, although the toilet block was clean, it had no other facilities. This stay cost me £35.10 per night and this was staying midweek on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night.

I ask the question or, more to the point, will you ask the question to the Caravan and Motorhome Club as to how it can justify the high cost of its campsites?

Ian

Lost holiday

We bought an Auto-Trail Tracker EKS, which is based on a Fiat Ducato, in 2018 thinking that, if we bought new, we would have no problems.

How wrong we were.

At the end of July we set off to tour Scotland for a couple of weeks, but on the second day of our holiday, the motorhome went into limp mode and we stopped in a layby and then called the RAC.

Sadly, it could not locate the problem and we had to be transported to the nearest Fiat garage where we had to leave the motorhome.

Next day we were informed that three injectors were faulty and the engine was damaged and would need to be replaced.

The estimate was around £8,000 so I contacted Fiat as there was only 13,500 miles on the clock and the 'van had been serviced every year, plus a new timing belt had been fitted at the last service in March,

Electric Bikes
It's fair to say electric bikes, or e-bikes if you want to use fewer vowels, have become one of the most must-have accessories in motorhomes in recent years. They bridge the gap between using pedal power and travelling around with a car on the back.
