THERE’S NO NEED FOR MARTIN WILLIS (INBOX, EVO 315) to go gentle into any good night. The thrill of affordable driving is still out there.

I’ve feathered my own nest with affordable smiles for miles with an MG TF 160 (purchased for just over £1000 in peak 2020 lockdown), a Renault Sport Twingo Gordini 133 (picked up for £4000) and a GT86 (for just shy of £9000). Each of them offers a huge amount of smiles per mile and both the GT86 and the Twingo are great daily drivers. The Twingo is amazingly practical with its sliding rear seats and the GT86 has a good boot and can be driven at 45mpg.
