Sewing Terminology – The Basics
Fabric See photo 1.
• Selvedge – The woven or finished edge, on either side of a length of fabric.
• Grainline – A large arrow, found on every pattern piece, denotes the direction that the pattern piece should face on the fabric. The arrow usually lies parallel to the selvage of the fabric.
• Warp grain – Lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvedge, has very little give. In most garments the lengthwise grain runs from shoulder to hemline.
• Weft grain – Crosswise grain, perpendicular to the selvedge, has more give. In most garments the crosswise grain runs from side seam to side seam. Tip to help remember – weft is left (to right).
• Bias grain – Is at a 45-degree angle to the warp and weft grains. Bias-cut garments usually drape softly. Used also for cutting bias
