Milan has a whole new energy and is emerging – or re-emerging – as a design, architecture, art and food hub. The city has long been a fashion centre – this is the birthplace of Armani, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana after all – but that design energy has spread. Contemporary arts centres including the Fondazione Prada, located in a former gin distillery and designed by starchitect Rem Koolhaas (including a startling four-storey building clad in 24-carat gold), and the Museum of Cultures, MUDEC, are putting Milan on the world stage more than just sartorially speaking.
