Where does a new cruise operator begin the process of redefining the luxury travel category? Listening to the people. Twenty thousand of them. That’s the strategy taken by Swiss company Explora Journeys – ultra-luxury cruising’s newest player, established on the bones of Italian shipping heritage.

Four years in development, luxe – the first of six new vessels for the Geneva-based brand – has arrived. A transformative new take on luxury ocean travel. At its heart, this prototype is a luxury hotel swimming pools, attentive and genuine service, and outstanding health/wellness facilities. And being a ‘home at sea’, the scenery is ever-changing, more often than not near the heart of a destination, as I discovered on my journey from New York City to Quebec City. Our captain times the sailing from New York’s Manhattan Cruise Terminal to coincide with the first rays of dawn to strike the face of Lady Liberty.
