My earliest memory of a Porsche 911 involves the original RS/R cars. Their widebody stance and iconic ducktail spoiler made them unlike anything else on the road. A 911 RS was my first Porsche, and it still holds a place in my collection… pocket-sized and sitting proudly on my desk!

My fascination with cars started early in life, and the 911 RS came into my world when I was small enough to fit inside a shopping cart – a kind of hush money from my mom to keep me well-behaved during a trip to the grocery.

Years later, as a teenager, I got my first chance to drive a 911. A local Ford dealer had an SC Coupe on the used car lot, and I convinced my mom to go for a test drive. I knew the 911 looked different, but that experience showed me how different they felt behind the wheel as well. We didn’t buy the SC, but that test drive ignited an ambition that would lead to a Porsche in my garage one day.

My first full-sized Porsche came in 2013 when I traded up from a Honda S2000. It was a certified pre-owned (CPO) car from a Porsche dealership in Atlanta. Although I had a general knowledge of the 911, I wasn’t very familiar with the specific models. When I visited the dealership to test drive a 997 Carrera S Cabriolet, a clever salesman sent me away in a 997 GTS Cabriolet.

I’ve owned that 997 for a decade now and have no plans to sell it. While the GTS model wasn’t numbered, they were produced in limited quantities, accounting for less than 10 per cent of all 997s. My Meteor grey Cabriolet with a six-speed is somewhat rare.

The more time I spent behind the wheel of the GTS, the more I realised it was the perfect 911 for me. When the time came to add another Porsche to my collection, a GTS was the obvious choice. With its widebody design, Fuchs-style wheels and ducktail spoiler, the 2016 911 Club Coupe, launched to celebrate PCA’s 60th anniversary in the US, felt like a continuation of my Porsche journey that had begun with that pocket-sized Porsche many years earlier.

In contrast to the 997 GTS, the 991.1-based Club Coupe was a limited-edition model. Porsche produced just 60 of these cars, and owners had to win the right to buy one. I made several attempts to acquire a Club Coupe, but failed. Eventually, I found a car that the original owner had built as an imposter after also failing to secure one of the 60 official cars. It felt like destiny.

In 2020, I added the 991.1 GTS Coupe to my collection. It features the newer seven-speed manual transmission and is painted in PTS Voodoo blue with Sport Classic wheels and the SportDesign Package, resembling the 60th anniversary cars.

My collection may be small, but it’s surprisingly diverse with as many differences as similarities. I enjoy comparing the two cars, which represent Porsche’s last generation before becoming part of the Volkswagen Auto Group, and the first generation after.

The 997 is more visceral, swift and nimble, and possesses the playfulness of a lighter car. It feels the sportier of the two. The 991 is more
