I remember lightning storms on summer holidays in the Mediterranean when I was a child. The sky was alive with bright, crackling white fire, and the soundtrack of thunderclaps gave me goosebumps. It seemed so foreign and strange to me, so wild and menacing.

Our first real lightning storms at sea were when we sailed across the Atlantic. The forks and flashes were far off, and I learned that you can see lightning up to 100 miles away. This made it less intimidating;
